New study: 40% of kids' food "empty calories"

The news reported today on the continuing epidemic of childhood obesity in the United States. Quoting an MD from the east coast, the story said that 40% of a child's diet between the ages of 2 and 18 is from "empty calories".

Eating foods with empty calories adds to your waistline, but provides no nourishment. Obesity follows.

The story described the types of foods that provide empty calories. Candy, junk food, and pizza. Pizza??

How is pizza an empty calorie food? It's bread, cheese, tomato sauce, and meat or vegetable topping. Those are all healthy foods. What's the problem?

Pizza becomes a junk food when you eat too much of it.

"Empty calorie" can refer to foods which are simply not nutritious. Pizza, cheeseburgers, fried chicken, and so on.

For example, the little Totino's "Party Pizzas" which are targeted at children and cost about a dollar at the grocery store. The pepperoni pizza contains 720 calories, 40 grams of fat, and a whopping 1740mg of sodium. A child should not be eating that much, it's not healthy. In fact, a healthy adult should probably not be eating that much...

Okay, but I need to ask this question...

Are we agreed that a Tostino's Pizza is not anything like a Pizzeria Tivoli pizza?

Seems like Totino's states their nutrition information.

Until one sees that from Pizzeria Tivoli's pizza's - how can one agree or disagree about the nutritional value?
