Welcome Sign In "The Grove"

Never mind that old "don't forget to turn out the lights" line people used to say about St. Louis.

From the Washington University Medical Center Redevelopment Corporation comes word that the Grove/Forest Park Southeast neighborhood will soon be welcoming residents and visitors to the area with a bright new illuminated sign over Manchester Avenue.

Saw it yesterday and didn't realize it was only a day old. It looks awesome, and I can't wait to see it lit up at night!

Now if we could only rehab the buildings in the neighborhood, but this street art should help correct?
It is a key area and suffers from what much of St. Louis suffers from, a political system gone awry.
This is a small, perhaps very small, effort to relive the glory of the past.
Until there is a description of the path of each neighborhood and how it relates to the whole, it is an exercise in diversion and distraction.
Don't get me wrong, I like it, it is at at a minimum better proportioned that the St. Louis U. stuff along Grand. (SLU must hire horrible designers)
But there are questions: for instance does it make sense to encourage investment in the commercial area without new efforts to do the same and at the same time, in the areas that feed Manchester?
Otherwise the publicly of the initial installation will be lost.
