My office is on the 16th floor of a downtown office building, close to two different Metro stations. Down on the street, there's a Toyota Prius parked in a specially reserved space. Both the car and the parking space are marked with the decal "We Car". Around the corner, there's another one.
Apparently they're part of some sort of car sharing program. Yet I've never seen anyone ever driving the cars. Does anybody know about the program? How do you get in on it? Could I ditch my car, ride Metro downtown, and then have the We Car avaiable for trips during the day out of the office?

WeCar
Basically you sign up for the program and then make a reservation for a car using an account number. The reservation is for a specific car at a specific spot. You then wave your membership card over an RFID sensor in the windshield that unlocks the car. Price is on an hourly basis with discounts if you keep it after hours but return it by 8am.
They've had WeCar at WashU for 2 years now. It's fairly expensive, but works well for people who don't have cars and need to run errands outside of the range of Metro.

We sold our second car when we moved Downtown, and on a few occasions have needed to go separate ways where Metro wouldn't suffice. Since they've added the WeCar program, we've not struggled with that occasional frustration.
I've used WeCar several times - love it - it's essentially a car rental membership program providing you a key fob for prearranged access.
When you want to use a car, reserve it online or by phone, run your errands or whatnot, and return by time expected, or call to lengthen your reservation - you're billed for time used.
Far cheaper annually than 2nd car ownership incidentals (insurance, property tax, gas, maintenance, parking, etc).
I think WeCar would be a little more useful if you could leave the car at an alternate location from where you picked it up, allowing for one-way trips.

This looks like a pretty decent program. I wish I had have discovered this before. It might have helped when I went to buy two Alfa Romeo cars One for me and one for the wife! As we just needed to get to the dealers to buy them and couldnt get there so ended up having to get a taxi which was very very expensive!
