It might be a good idea. The boundaries of governmental units, such as cities and counties ought to reflect the places people live and work. I do not understand why the topic is so taboo.
What would the surrounding municipalities have to gain?
For starters, St. Louis would drop to about 70th in the country for crime rates. That bodes well for the entire region.
It's all in the marketing. The city of St. Louis is a city-county, not an independent city not in a county.
